Leicester approves $40.15 million FY 2027 budget, moves election to May.

Leicester approves $40.15 million FY 2027 operating budget funded by $820,556 free cash, other revenue, and property taxation. The school budget totals $21,650,839, down $542,217 from the prior year due to reduced shelter-building revenue and lackluster state aid growth. Voters also moved the Annual Town Election to the second Tuesday of May beginning in 2027, allowing newly elected officials to take office before the July 1 fiscal year start.
Moderator Jeffrey Fisher noted Leicester currently holds the fifth-latest election date among the 176 Massachusetts municipalities with the same form of government. Police Chief Kenneth M. Antanavica won town approval to extend his service through April 30, 2028, by special legislation vote (66-1).
The town also approved bylaws consolidating descriptions of elected and appointed boards and establishing a formal business licensing and business certificate framework.
